I confess: for me one of the most difficult aspects of clowning, especially as a solo performer, is developing new material.
For a long while, I have envied musicians. There seems to be endless catalogues of songs to sing or play. It seems easier to adapt a song to one’s style – range, mood, tempo – than creating a whole new song. As a clown, I feel I need to constantly be creating new material without any previous template.
I find it easier to improvise. I like playing with others. I can be in the moment with them, help create a memorable event. It is difficult to do that on stage for 30 minutes or in worship for 60 without having prepared material.
That’s why I appreciate this list. In it I find a combination of reminders to both prepare my character and prepare myself for being in front of an audience.
